I have always believed that Modiano Cristallo’s were better cards than other Modiano styles...as I had all but written off Modiano cards until the Cristallo's came along some months back. I really like Cristallo cards and the acetates are an improvement on the regular version (even if the improvement appears only to be aesthetic at this point). Getting these acetate cards made me take a closer look at the Cristallo’s and I spent the weekend comparing the acetate version to the regular version. The aesthetic differences are:

1) The acetates come in 2 pip and the reg. come in 4 pip. The faces are otherwise identical as both have my 3 favorite features: jumbo index, beige antique center and security ink red. The only minor complaint I ever had about the reg. version was I thought that 4 pips were a bit much with jumbo index…the acetates “fix” that.

2) The acetates have a white border on the card backs and the regular version has a color border. The regular version with the color border give the illusion of full bleed backs (true full bleed backs don’t have borders). I really like the color borders on the regular version but I actually prefer the white borders on the acetates (to my surprise) as they look more professional.

I poked, prodded and felt these cards up for more than an hour over the weekend but I was unable to detect any difference (comparing acetate with regular) in shuffling, thickness, flexibility, texture, glide or bend recovery. However, after taking such a close look a these cards, I realized that the Cristallo’s are even better than I first gave them credit. I have them rated on the same level as regular Dal Negro Freedom’s and Fournier’s but I have been so impressed with how these cards have held up through all my little tests that I’m considering moving Cristallo’s past the other 2 great cards (never expected to say that…but I need to get the cards in play more to be sure). The main reason for the upgrade would be that the Cristallo’s have better flexibility than Dal Negro’s and better texture than Fournier’s. My hope is that the true bonus of the acetates cards is that they will have a longer life than the regular version and other 100% plastic cards.

When comparing the Modiano acetates to the DN acetates, they both have that great, great texture. The DNs are stiffer than the Cristallo’s and I’ve come to realize that Cristallo’s (and Fournier’s) seem to have the perfect balance of flexibility without feeling flimsy...and the texture and face features move these cards close to the top of my list. If these cards hold up over time, the DN acetates will have to make room at the top or possibly take a back seat to a new #1 (but only time will tell).
